Dodos Riding Dinos - Draco Studios - Board Game Review

The cardboard form of racing has always suffered a little bit from the stop start syndrome, where the flow of a continual race is something that is difficult to present in the real time game mechanics. It's maybe one of the few genres where the videogame will easily dominate as planning and reaction are something that happens at the same time. The only way to make it work is to drag racing into the luddite arena and force it to play by tabletop rules. Dodos Riding Dinos arrives on the table with a cartoon racing familiarity that hopefully will have you cheering at the side of the racetrack. Overview Dodos Riding Dinos is a prehistoric racing game which runs using a planning and action phase plus a mixture of physical dexterity as you chase around a choice of several themed tracks trying to complete a circuit and win the game.  Main Play Racing games need to be one of two things. If you take the likes of Steampunk Rally, the planning phase is such a huge part of the gameplay, creati

The Lord of the Rings - Adventure to Mount Doom - Kosmos Games - Board Game Review

Well. Looks like Adventure to Mount Doom is trying the old roll and move mechanic. That's a bold strategy, lets see if it pays off. You heard that right. Rolling dice and climbing a track. No kidding. No Jokes. Lord of the Rings, dice style.  Overview Stop me if you've heard this before. You see, there's this really powerful jewellery hobby magic chap who decided to make ring for all of his pals because he was generous like that. So he gave them away like they were candy at Hallowe'en and then everything was going fine until as normal giving people presents and expecting something in return all got a bit weird and then there was a fight and the ring that the hobby boy had made got lost in a big fight and some one else found it and then he got jealous, and started eating his raw fish, and then hide in a cave until it looked like he was wearing really big glasses. Then cut to this old guy who obviously didn't separate his whites from his dark clothes who then rocked u

Excavation Earth Board Game Review Plus It Belongs in a Museum Expansion

Do we talk enough about the board game catfish? The game that gives the impression of one type of game when it is clearly another? I'm pretty sure that we've all experienced that at some point, with one of the biggest famous offenders being Scythe, that promised mega mechanical combat, to instead deliver what was essential a medium weight Euro. Then we come to Excavation Earth, a game where the cover gives the impression of wild and exotic alien artefacts and the title is definitely saying that there is digging involved. Time to grab the electro-shovel..  Overview Excavation Earth is an economic market manipulation game where you are trying to gather artefacts that you will then sell at the highest price you can while trying to make sure you are effecting the profitability of your opponents. Mainplay Quite simply put, you travel to dig sites, collect old human artefacts, assign traders to sell these items and then sell the items when you are ready to willing alien buyers. Selli

Trial By Trolley and Travel By Trolley - Skybound Entertainment. Card Game Review.

I don't make a habit of rushing towards card games that offer slightly 'edgy' subjects in the form of entertainment. I'm not trying to be morally superior though I recognise it's a thin tightrope to tread over looking like a grumpy old preachy man child. I often just don't find them funny when comedy is based around making other people feel awkward while you are attempting to play a game with them. I often wonder it its 'just me' and maybe I need to 'take a joke'. So maybe I need to start off with something simpler and lighter in that respect. So the choice of murdering a group of people I don't know based on some light debate seems like the perfect starting point. Overview Trial by Trolley encapsulates that age old problem. you've different groups tied to a trolley track with some being nice and others being annoying or down right evil. So which track do you send the train down causing mayhem and karma and injury? It's done to a deba

Meeples & Monsters Board Game Review - Alderac Entertainment Group - AEG

You know what they say, you don't see a mechanic for some time and then all of a sudden two games appear at once, thrusting their bags in your face and asking you to take a dive of luck into the velveteen darkness and fumble around hoping that you're grabbing something useful.  Overview Meeples & Monsters is a bag building meeple based game. So as your turns progress you'll be trying to upgrade the quality of the meeple resources you have while trying not to dilute your own supply too much that your end up continually drawing the weaker components.  Mainplay Each player is in charge of their own personal meeple army that they will aim to try to enrich over a series of rounds by constructing buildings in the small city of Rowan. The first phase is either about construction or upgrading the existing units that you own to access special abilities that some of the units offer. Every player starts off with a generous number of peasants that have a basic attack value and as
