Rear Window Board Game Review - Funko Games

The danger with basing any product off a popular film, book or character is that you need to strike the fine balancing act between honouring that which you are borrowing while at the same time making your own product worthwhile. It needs to treat the source with the due respect and care it deserves while making sure the entertainment product doesn't compromise itself it what it was set out to do. Funko Games in the past couple of years have been walking this tightrope with various degrees of success. But for their latest feat, they've removed the safety net and put a blindfold on in trying to create a game for the iconic classic Rear Window.  Overview For those not familiar with the story, photojournalist L.B. Jefferies is confined to his apartment after a near death experience when working at a Grand Prix event. With a fertile imagination and continuing heatwave, he starts to have suspicions about his neighbours activities which leads to him encouraging his friends to help h

Big Boss - Wolfgang Kramer - Funko Games - Board Game Review

I'm fairly impressed with the current range of games on offer from Funko Games. Their partnership with the Prospero Hall development and design team seems to be a very successful symbiosis, and I've already enjoyed the likes of Pan Am immensely. They seem to be successfully balancing offering games for the mass market and still attract those who demand some more meat on their carboard bones. With Big Boss they are reprinting and updating an already existing game that up until now has only existed in German. Overview Big Boss is about building up your business empire by creating new businesses and physically expanding their presence on the board in order to increase their share value. You'll merge companies and buy shares with the aim of earning the most money by the end of the game.  Mainplay There's isn't a huge amount in terms of mechanics to Big Boss. You've got the option from the outset to either play with the updated rules or the original rules from the

Indiana Jones - Sands of Adventure - Funko Games - Board Game Review.

Dum dah dump dum, dum dah dum, dum dah dump dum, dum DAH DUM DUM DUHHHM.. You may not mean to, but as soon as you looked at the title and as soon as you started reading the sentence above, there's a chance it magically turned into a theme tune of one of the most iconic film series of all time. Indiana Jones is part of my childhood, from watching Raiders of the Lost Ark at primary school, with some fairly naive teachers who obviously hadn't watched the film to its face melting conclusion. To much maligned Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which I still watched with much enjoyment regardless of the aliens. One thing I've always wondered is firstly why the eminent archaeologist had never been committed to cardboard before that I can remember, and secondly, how the devil do you even begin to do it without causing the inevitable wailing and gnashing of teeth from the well established fan base. In Sands of Adventure, you distill it down to some of the things Indiana Jones is known fo

Undaunted Battle of Britain Review - Osprey Games

So how exactly do you launch one of Osprey Games most successful game series into the skies and maintain the balance, avoid the boredom of circling for targets and keep the strong overall deck building main mechanic? Carefully. You do it carefully. You treat it with the biggest kid gloves. After all, they launched Undaunted Stalingrad to much critical acclaim last year which presented itself as a semi legacy game that changed as you played. Undaunted Battle of Britain appears to be like the palette cleanser after such a successful meal, but shows that Trevor Benjamin and David Thompson aren't happy to just make another version with a few changes in order to make it appear like the game is now just trucks and soldiers in the skies.  Undaunted on the ground is all about steady movement, planning out the route to attack and controlling areas and important targets. Undaunted Battle of Britain had to deal with the problem of making you feel like you were soaring the skies, continually

Inside Job Card Game Review - Kosmos Games

Some of us have game genres that are immediate non starters. Others have genres that they play where they love a certain type of game so much, that it needs to make sure it doesn't drop the ball on any aspect of how it plays otherwise it will be confined to the shelf of failure. It's a tightrope I would never envy for any designer that tries to take it on. So I salute Tanner Simmons from the outset for taking on such a potentially thankless task for their hidden role game Inside Job. Overview Inside Job is a hidden role and trick taking game, so at the beginning of the game players will be assigned roles in secret that they need to keep from other players. They will then use the a combination of the mission cards and the playing cards they have been dealt to win rounds and therefore intel or complete missions and put it towards the agents overall victory.   Mainplay Inside Job has you concentrating on two aspects from the beginning. As a agent you want to be completing the ro

Jaws of the Lion Board Game Review - Cephalofair Games - First Impressions

Why even write about a game that's approaching its fourth year of existence in the tabletop space? The answer to that is relatively simple. I think at certain points there are some cornerstones of the board game experience that if you get the opportunity to play and write about, then you sit down, play some games and then put together some ego massaging words. As time goes on it's not entirely wrong to state that Cephalofair games are like assholes, in the fact that most people by now have one. Or at least have been in the company of one. Maybe even lifted one up to see how heavy it was. In truth, they actually aren't like assholes at all. However it is true that since Isaac Childres birthed the 15kg child that was Gloomhaven, it's been almost impossible to avoid the fact that this world exists and I should probably make you aware of my thoughts on the smaller of these dungeon delicatessen counters.  Overview Jaws of the Lion is a dungeon crawler technically, so you&#
