Review / Preview Policy

We are happy to consider all submissions for review and preview purposes based on the following understanding stated below. If you are happy with the general terms then please get in touch, and we can start to organise how we can work together.

You can email us on Magic (AT) We're Not Wizards (dot) Com for any enquiries in relation to reviews and previews.

Providing Coverage to Products Using Generative AI Created Art.
We will not provide coverage to companies that use generative AI Art as part of their game production.

Types of Games - We will consider looking at any games that are suitable from the ages of 5 upwards. We are happy to consider games from differing mechanical genres, though we have very limited capacity for bigger multiplayer games. We are unable to cover TTRPGs at present. We are unable to cover hilarious adult themed party games.

Crowd-Funding / Game Preview - We consider a preview as a written or video piece about the game based on its current state at the time of play, and we will provide both our positive thoughts and concerns of the game in the video or article. A preview is based on a game that is subject to change. We will label the article as a preview and describe it as such in any communications through our Social Media Channels. We would request that you do not label this as a 'Review' when you are sharing the content. We generally will not alter this content after publication except for factual omissions.

Six Degrees of Expectation - We consider our SDoE as a summary of the main gameplay points of the game. This can cover games that are already published or in a preview stage for Kickstarter. We will cover an Overview, Main Gameplay, How to Win, Learning, Looks and Time. During the piece we may pass comment on aspects we wish to draw to the viewers attention. We understand that the game may be subject to change. We may label the content as a First Impressions piece and describe it as such in any communications through our Social Media Channels. We would request that you do not label this as a 'Review' when you are sharing the content. We generally will not alter this content after publication except for factual omissions.

Review / Final Thoughts - We consider a review as a written or video piece about the game based on the final form that will be playable by the public, and will only be subject to change through a reprint or second edition or subsequent amendment. We will discuss both our positive thoughts and concerns of the game in the video or article. We will label the article as a review and describe it as such in any communications through our social media channels. We would request that you label this as a review when sharing the content. This content would not be applicable for any payment from yourselves. We generally will not alter this content after publication except for factual omissions which would have an effect on the the outcome of our opinions. We make no guarantee that coverage from our channel will be positive for your product and agreement to send us your product for coverage does not form any part of a contract that makes it compulsory for us to create positive reviews.

Payment - We will not accept payment for any content that we produce that contains an opinion from ourselves. Games that we receive as review copies will not be sold on though we may donate these copies to friends and family. We are happy to pass on review copies to other reviewers if required.

Noise Creation - We consider Noise Creation to be posts on social media, including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and other platforms. These posts may consist of photographs, short videos, or posts that will draw attention to the game in the form of observations or jokes that may fit into a current trend, with the aim to draw attention to your product. These posts will not be used to make political statements. They will not be used to the detriment of another brand or content that would show your company in a bad light. You reserve the right to ask for these posts to be removed on request.

Number of Plays / Player Count - We will aim to play the game a number of times on a two to four player basis in order to understand the main mechanics as much as we can. We are unable to promise that we will be able to play a game that requires four or more players based on the current circumstances. If this is the case with your game, then please make us aware of this before we come to any agreement.

Timescale - We will aim to play the game and have minimum content created within a four to six week period, however due to current changing restrictions, this may not always be possible, and we may start to create noise creation content in its place until we can play the game under the correct circumstances.

Social Share and Marketing  - We will share the content created for you across our Social Media channels where appropriate. While we do not consider this as mandatory, we will expect some form of sharing of the content we have created for you across your own channels as well. This can be in the form of interaction with the content, or sharing on your companies' own Social Media channels. This will allow the content to reach a wider audience and therefore increase the overall exposure for your brand and product.

Evaluation Copies / Final Production copies - We expect evaluation copies of the product to be provided where possible. This does not need to be the final version of the product, however we wish to show your game in the best light. Rulebooks should be provided and where not available, a plain text document that can be printed should be provided. We are happy to forward the product on to another Media Company, providing we are reimbursed for the shipping costs. We do not expect to be provided with a final production copy for any project that we have supported during a Crowd funding campaign and this will have no bearing on our decision to cover your product.

Using Our Branding / Content - If we produce content for you, we grant you the right to use that content and our logo across any of your social media channels and marketing, providing you do not charge for access to this content unless you have express permission to do so. We grant you permission to use quotes, soundbites and pictures from the content we have created in order to market your product within a reasonable timescale, i.e. if this is the result of the rerunning of a crowdfunding campaign. We do not allow you to use our logo as a placeholder for any 'Preview coming soon' communications on your crowd funding campaign page unless we have given you permission to do so. We reserve the right to ask you to remove any of our logos or content on request on reasonable grounds.

Decisions of Coverage - We reserve the right to decline offers to provide coverage without providing explanation. This is not a employed role and unless there is a contractual agreement, we are unable to guarantee coverage will be provided within a specific time period, unless this has been agreed specifically beforehand. If your requirements need to meet a particular deadline, then please make us aware of this when you contact us. Please feel free to contact us to discuss further through our contact form

Taking slow methodical steps, taking your time, closing your eyes and breathing in slowly, taking in the smell of nature and the scenery and managing the sensory overload crashing over you with a pine freshness. Do that. Stop and breathe. Take it all in. Be at peace. You might be inclined to use the word 'majesty', and you wouldn't be blamed for feeling a slight sense of being overwhelmed, as once again you're reminded of how stupidly small you are in relation to everything around you. That no amount of preparation would help you if the uncontrolled environment decided to focus it's gaze entirely on you, to put you back in the food chain. You might think to yourself you could survive, but the reality is that you'd die of thirst before you died of boredom, and so we sanitise our touches with the grander examples of nature, by sticking to the path, and coming within touching distance enough to go ooh and ahh, like we are watching fireworks. Empire Plateau Board Game Kickstarter Preview

This is the pre-production version, so the art, rules and mechanics may be subject to change over the next couple of months. Therefore please treat this as a first thoughts piece, based on version of the game that we were provided with. We have not been paid for the preview. We also do not provide a full play by play explanation of the game, so not all mechanics may be mentioned in the preview. So what have I done? I really don't know. I have a rule about reviews that I keep to myself which is very simple. Any designer that contacts me and says 'Well, it's like chess but..' I normally respond with a quiet thank you and then a polite decline. I want people to sell me the game because of what it is, not because they claim to have improved a game that is so in it's own category some people wouldn't even necessarily put it down as a board game. No, making the horsey jump an extra space isn't going to cut it, and no I like the prawns the way they are I thank you
