Armada Mantic Games - Naval Battles Skirmish Game Review - First Impressions

I'm not sure if there is anything more delicious than the emergent narrative that appears in a non narrative based game. The tales of success and failure. The type of game that if you gave a report on, would read like a story of intensity and cunning, where desperate tactics in desperate situations won the day. Or even better the ones that force ridiculous situations that have both sides grinning at each other. Sworn enemies sharing a joke across a snarling and biting sea. Armada from Mantic games provides a framework in which these things are a possibility, a foundation that endeavours to avoid sinking to the bottom of the cold, bland and predictable same tactics sea.  Overview Armada from Mantic Games is a naval battle game where you will pilot miniature boats within a set area, trying to win the agreed scenario. You'll be manoeuvring in order to get within firing distance of your opponents in the hope to either sink their vessels, achieve an objective or force your opponen

The Shores of Tripoli Board Game Review - Fort Circle Games

I approach a game like The Shores of Tripoli with a bit of trepidation, after all if there's one thing that some people don't like, it's having politics forced into their gaming spaces. So if you are one of those people who want the world full of spaceships and dragons and don't want to play through the plans, tactics and ramifications based around the intervention of the American Naval forces and their attempts to remove the stranglehold of piracy that was occuring in the early 1800s off the shores of Tripoli, then consider yourself warned. Are you sure I can't tempt you with some wooden boats and gold coloured coins? How about some hot card event action?  Overview  The Shores of Tripoli is a historical events driven card game where you will play cards and add components to the board in order to achieve specific objectives. The game works on a timeline and so certain events will only take place at later points in the game, unlocking further available actions in t

Mechanica Board Game Review - Resonym

I like a little bit of quirky. Quirky is like gluten free soy sauce in a chicken and mushroom stir fry. Put the right amount of soy sauce in a dish and watch it sing. Watch it bring out all the main intended flavours and make you feel like you can cook anything. You sit there proud at the dinner table as you see satisfied taste buds and tummies. Add too much and it becomes a chore to eat. All the tastes and textures are there, but everything becomes a chore to chomp through. Soy sauce is the very definition of overdoing and trying too hard. Quirky can be fun, but too much quirky is like biting your toenails after six months of leaving them to grow. Mechanica from Resonym tries to walk that tightrope, juggling soy sauce and dealing with overgrown toenails in an analogy that at this point has really just gone too far.  Overview In Mechanica, you're the owner operator of a Tidybot factory trying to increase your production rate and make the most money. Mechanica is an engine buildin
