The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls - Card Game Review

The Binding of Isaac is a hugely successful videogame, and thanks to two extremely lucrative crowdfunding efforts that netted around $8 million, you could argue that its a highly successful card game as well. The videogame fits almost too perfectly into begin turned into cardboard, with its roguelike genetics being suited to the randomness of dungeon crawler, variable bonuses and and player powers sitting well within the tabletop realm. There's around eighty thousand people who have some kind of variation of the tabletop game. So surely its extremely good because well funded games are always amazing, aren't they.  I'm approaching this as someone who is away from the hype canoe sailing down the river rapids of marketing and excitement and so this is probably going to be dull in comparison. I'm also someone who is a fan of the game, and has spent many an hour running around randomly generated dungeons of blood and filth.  For those unfamiliar with the videogame, you play

Crypt of Chaos - Crystal Dagger Games - Card Game Review

This review is based on the final retail version of the game provided to us by the designer and publisher. We were not paid for this review. We give a general overview of the gameplay and so not all of the mechanical aspects of the game may be mentioned.  Hey, do you remember HeroQuest? A game so wrapped up and covered in nostalgia that you can only look on an original physical copy of the box by wearing rose tinted spectacles? Do you remember running around dungeons trying to succeed in the various quests? Do you remember playing as a Barbarian who basically ran around in a set of furry knickers with a decent sized chopper, collecting treasure unless they drew my favourite treasure card and found nothing? Do you remember that as a game it was actually fairly tricky to beat and relied on so much randomness as you played? Me too, me too.. Would you like to play a game like that again? Like now? After all the iterations of games that have been out? From Super Dungeon Explore to Dungeon

Evil Corp - Board Game Review

We give a general overview of the gameplay so not all mechanical aspects may be mentioned.  Billionaires are a stain on society, the epitome of legal theft on a grand scale. Show me a billionaire and I can show you a parasite that hoovers up all the resources that surround it and contributes virtually nothing back to society. A parasite refusing to pay for the local infrastructure they use, refusing to pay decent wages and treat their employees like actual human beings. They set up charities to show how lovely they really are long after the damage has been done. If I met a billionaire in the flesh, it would be to ask them why they kept on hitting themselves. The act of being able to change the world in a minute and refuse because of an irrational greed to gather zeros, is the highest level a sociopath could hope to achieve. (Smiley face, wink wi

Foul Play - The Manor House Murder - A Card Game Review

This review is based on the retail version of the game that we were provided by the designer and publisher. We were not paid for this review.  It was at this point that the atmosphere in the room changed, and not even the overly dramatical crackling of seasoned logs in the overly dramatical fireplace was going to warm things up in a room that was chilled by the cold vacuum.. OF MURDER. The silence was only broken by the crackling of knuckles by Smothers, the house butler. A man with a chip on his shoulder the size of a grown dolphin, and whose shoes squeaked just as much.  The detective breathed in sharply as though they were about to sing that really high and long note in Frozen that everyone attempts at least once. The cook, the stable hand and the gardener looked on in disdain, while everyone else just hoped that this time, it was going to be over for once and for all. The butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker? Well, that was just another silly story for another time.  The d

Eternal Palace is coming to Kickstarter on the 8th March. The main board of a tabletop game can be the ultimate in smoke and mirrors. It can completely trick you into thinking you're about to step into something extremely complicated. Or it gives you the impression, like the almost coaster sized board for King of Tokyo, that you're only going to need minimum brain power in order to tackle the rolling of dice and kicking of monster butt. In the case when you're looking at a game online, where the board sits out in

"We can do an online demo if you want."  Ah, the irony of joining an analogue hobby to escape the screens, only to find that more and more in this day and age that the screen is becoming the only way to get access to some games.   But this time, I grin at the screen because this time my lovelies, I'm no longer unfamiliar with how Tabletop Simulator works, and this time, I know that you can used WASD to move round the table and flip cards and take things out of bags and OH FOR GOODNESS SAKE WHY CAN'T THEY HEAR ME..  So a

Alice in Wordland - Drawlab Entertainment - Game Review

The unwelcome and unwanted invitation that sits on top of a rose bush, speckled with traces of scarlet from the still slightly drying red roses that are actually definitely not white. You reach into you pocket for the pocket watch you try to keep on hand at all times. Because you never want to be the one who is late. No, people who are late here often end up with shorter sized necks than what they were born with on account of having their heads offed from their shoulders. Such is the delight of entertainment when she demands it, and she demands it so often that you often wish you were the dormouse, fast asleep at the table while the madness goes on around you.  Yet no amount of thinking is going to to make that invitation disappear like a Cheshire cat, for this time the Quee

Aroma - A Game of Essence - Odd Hackwelder and Organic Aromas - First Thoughts & Review

We were provided a copy of the game for evaluation purposes. Ritual smelling. Or things that you would normally take in deep breaths of at the first given opportunity. The smell of fresh sheets when you climb into bed, the blast of escaping coffee gas when you first break the seal on a new jar. The smell of their hair when you are snuggling. The printed centre of a new rulebook. Scents are something that can take us places to the point where they can elicit an emotional reaction. Whether that be pleasant or unpleasant, smells have a way of coding themselves into our very memories to leave a lasting impression.  Interestingly enough, apart from the chemical joy of a freshly printed rulebook, I've never really played a game based around the sense of smell, and so when it came to being offered a chance to look at Aroma - A Game of Essen

Chronicles of Crime 1400 1-4 players Age 14+ Designed by David Cicurel and Wojciech Grajkowski Published by Lucky Duck Games It’s an exaggeration to say that digital content and apps are controversial in boardgames, but it is fair to say that they’re crowd splitters.   Between fears of not being able to play a game when digital support is removed and having to hand over part of your device to a company, however trusted, there is some degree of resistance from even those willing to accept the concept.   Added to that the fact that many app integrations boil down to glorified timers and a lot of gamers only play games to get devices off the table, games with integrated apps will have some people giving a game the side eye.   The Chronicles of Crime series has arguably been

I was around nine years old, in primary school, and we were having our normal one hour reading time in the morning. Reading time was a strange type of affair, because you either brought in books that you owned yourself or had chosen something from 'the classroom bookcase'. If you had the pleasure of picking something from 'the classroom bookcase', then you had to be quick and crafty to make sure you bagged a book like Lion Adventure or The Secret Garden. If you were too slow, you might end up with some random book that you were stuck with until you were finished it
